Text & Voice Logging

Text & Voice Logging

Type or speak what you ate in plain language. The AI handles the rest.

Text and voice are the fastest ways to log a meal. Both use the same natural language parsing — the only difference is whether you type or talk.

How It Works

On the Log screen, type what you ate into the text field and tap Send. The AI parses your input into individual food items with estimated calories and macros. No special formatting required.

For voice input, tap the microphone icon inside the text field. Speak the way you would type. The system transcribes your speech and processes it identically to text input.

What the AI Produces

Here are examples of what to expect:

You Type or SayAI Estimate
”two eggs and toast with butter”~350 kcal, 20g protein, 18g fat, 28g carbs
”large iced latte with oat milk”~250 kcal, 5g protein, 8g fat, 40g carbs
”grilled chicken salad with ranch”~450 kcal, 35g protein, 25g fat, 15g carbs

These are estimates, not laboratory measurements. They are accurate enough for tracking trends over days and weeks.

Tips for Better Estimates

Be specific when it matters. “6oz grilled chicken breast” produces a tighter estimate than “chicken.” The AI does its best with vague descriptions, but specificity reduces the margin of error.

Include preparation method. “Fried” versus “grilled” versus “baked” significantly changes calorie estimates, primarily due to fat content.

Mention quantities. “Two eggs” is better than “eggs.” “Large bowl of chili” is better than “chili.”

Don’t stress about perfection. The AI produces a reasonable estimate from even brief descriptions. You can always refine after.

Refinement

After logging, you can correct the AI’s estimate using natural language. On the entry’s detail screen, type a correction describing what changed: “that was brown rice, not white rice” or “I only ate half.” The AI re-analyzes with the updated information and adjusts the nutrition values accordingly.

This is useful when you realize the AI misidentified an ingredient or misjudged a portion. You do not need to delete the entry and start over.

Voice via Siri

In addition to in-app voice input, Rubric supports Siri commands from your home screen or Apple Watch. You can say things like “Log 500 calories” or quickly log a meal without opening the app. [VERIFY]

Previous Entries

As you type, the text field may show suggestions based on your logging history. If you frequently log the same meals, these suggestions save time — tap one to reuse a previous entry without retyping it.
